Lando Norris has finally broken his silence on Oscar Piastri replacing Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren in 2023. Ricciardo’s imminent departure was announced in August with the Australian leaving McLaren at the end of the current campaign – despite having a year left on his contract.
Ricciardo’s loss was Piastri’s gain, as the 21-year-old was announced as his fellow Australian’s replacement after snubbing current team Alpine where he is a reserve driver. Piastri will team up with Norris, creating one of the most exciting young pairings in the sport.
Ahead of their link up in 2023, Norris has revealed he is ‘excited’ to work alongside one of Formula 1’s brightest prospects. He told RacingNews365: “I’m excited to work with someone different.
“I’ve had two very different, extremely good drivers [Carlos Sainz Jr and Ricciardo as teammates] in my first few years in Formula 1, so I always look forward to working with someone new. I just hope that they’re someone you can get along with and have some fun with [but] I [also] don’t mind if they hate me, and they never want to talk to me.

As mentioned by the Englishman, Norris has worked with two of F1’s strongest drivers in Ricciardo and Sainz throughout his career so far. After working alongside two of the sport’s most seasoned professionals, the youngster feels he is able to judge the fine line between being friends and rivals with his teammates.
He commented: “You have to get people who are more ruthless, and at the same time don’t want to be as friendly. I guess there’d be differences between Carlos and Daniel.

Daniel is just a guy you can have a lot of laughs with and you want to make each other laugh and enjoy [things]. As soon as you get out of the car it’s serious. But when you don’t have to be as serious, you enjoy it. And you have fun.
“With Carlos, a lot of it was going out to play golf and going out sometimes and things like that. We have a lot of respect for one another. But we’re also just good friends away from the circuit. But everyone knows when we’re on the track, there’s nothing more that we want to do than beat each other.”
