F1: Lewis Hamilton goes for a seaside run

Lewis Hamilton is still negotiating a contract extension with Mercedes for the 2021 season after his deal expired two weeks ago. The Brit wants to remain with the Silver Arrows as he looks to pull away from Michael Schmuacher’s seven world titles.

Express Sport understands that Mercedes are confident that Hamilton will sign his new contract before pre-season testing starts on March 2.

But that has not stopped more rumours from doing the rounds as this time Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf has weighed in.

They believe the hold up is over two things; Hamilton’s salary and the length of the deal.

Hamilton is apparently keen to keep his enormous £35million-a-year, but Mercedes are looking to cut costs.

The report adds that the Silver Arrows are only willing to table a 12-month extension.

Those suggestions were put to Mercedes by Formula1News but they “don’t comment on speculation and rumours, and there are a lot of them about right now.”

They added: “This shouldn’t be understood as any kind of indication that De Telegraaf is correct; it’s simply our house policy not to engage with speculation.”

Meanwhile, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has hinted that contract talks may not be as straight forward as initially imagined.

The Austrian has explained how there could be different obstacles his team will encounter.

“It doesn’t worry me at all, because I will always respect Lewis’s decisions.

“Whether this is staying with us for a long time, or whether that means leaving the sport and pursuing different interests.

“I think we need to be ready for all kinds of curveballs being thrown at us.

“But at the same time, we talk a lot, and we are very transparent with each other. I think there is more to achieve together.”

Hamilton’s father Anthony insists the F1 star will continue racing for many year, despite being 36 years old.

“As far as I’m aware, he carries on racing,” he told talkSPORT. “He loves racing, he loves what he does.

“He has a voice now in the sport, which is also fantastic, but as far as I’m aware he’s carrying on racing.

“It’s a definite, as far as I know, the last time I spoke to him yesterday, he’s definitely carrying on racing.”
