George Russell was on the verge of tears when speaking to Sky Sports after the Singapore GP, when he was forced to retire after a crash on the final lap.

Russell had been second when a safety car gave him the chance to pit, seeing him drop to fourth, but the Brit was now on fresher tyres than those on the podium.

And, alongside team-mate Lewis Hamilton, the pair went hunting top spot – passing Charles Leclerc – as they placed Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz under significant pressure.

Russell was pushing his car to the limit, when he clipped a corner, causing him to fly off the track on the final lap – crashing out of the Singapore GP.

Speaking to Sky, he said: "No words, to be honest. It was such a long race, a physical race, and it was difficult to keep concentration when Carlos was backing the pack up.

"I think we were half-a-cars length from winning the race, had I got past Lando, I think we would have been able to get past Carlos.

"Then the last lap, millimetre lapse of concentration and then game over, so yeah, I just want to say sorry to the whole team."

It was Sainz who finally ended Max Verstappen's dominence, becoming the first driver to win a race this season not in a Red Bull. And only the third driver to win a race – with Sergio Perez winning in Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan.
