The Trevor Lawrence era has officially begun in Jacksonville.
After spending most of the preseason claiming a competition had not yet been decided between Lawrence and Gardner Minshew, Jaguars coach Urban Meyer finally relented by delivering the result everyone anticipated: Lawrence has prevailed and will start in Week 1 for the new-look Jags.
“It was good. We talked about our QB room,” Lawrence told reporters Wednesday when asked about how he felt after learning he’d won the starting job. “We have a great group, so I’m really excited for the opportunity. It doesn’t really change anything, though. Still got the same task in front of us. Got to get a lot better … It really doesn’t change much. But yeah, I’m really excited for the opportunity, grateful for it.”
The first-overall pick of the 2021 draft filled the role of QB1 in the preseason through two weeks, taking starting reps against Cleveland before exiting early in the second quarter with 15 total snaps. He played more than double the snaps in Jacksonville’s Monday night loss to New Orleans, a game in which Lawrence completed 14 of 23 passes for 113 yards despite rarely having open pass-catchers to target.
“It’s frustrating, but also we just got to stick together and keep playing,” Lawrence said of the Jags’ preseason struggles. “We’re gonna figure it out. I’m really confident in that. We have a bunch of guys that are putting the work in and we’re going to do everything it takes to get on the right track, and I’m confident in that and I’m not worried. Obviously, you’d like to score more points than we have, for sure. But it’s all stuff we can build on. We know what we need to get better at, so it’s just a matter of doing it and going out there and practicing it.”
As we all know, preseason is more about the reps than the results. After spending the top pick on Lawrence, this announcement was only a matter of time.
So ends the preseason exercise of a QB competition in Jacksonville, where Jaguars fans hope Lawrence becomes their starter for the next decade. He’ll begin his road to potential future football glory in Houston, where the Jaguars will take on the Texans to open the 2021 regular season.
