Chiefs beat Eagles to win Super Bowl – Andrew Gamble reports

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones admitted his backroom team had “a tear in their eyes” after they snapped-up Deuce Vaughn in the 2023 NFL Draft. Vaughn’s father Chris works as a scout for the Cowboys, and Jones labelled the draft pick as “bigger than we realise” during an emotional conversation with the running back.

“Look here, man, do you want to come to work with me next week?” Vaughn Snr told his son over the phone as his voice cracked. “I wouldn’t mind that at all,” came the reply.

And after Jones was put on the phone to the player, he said: “I don’t know when I’ve been speaking for everybody that’s really in the heart of the Dallas Cowboys… is standing here with a tear in their eye. We’re so happy to have you on the Dallas Cowboys.

“What I really want to say [is that] you earned every ounce of me being able to make this call. I’m so excited. There’s just something magical about this moment that may be bigger than we even realise here talking to you on the phone. But you is now a Dallas Cowboy. Your daddy just handed the card in. Right here. He’s got it on him. Congratulations.”

According to ESPN, Vaughn Snr refused to write a report on his son ahead of the Draft and left meetings whenever the conversation turned to the 21-year-old as he didn’t want to influence the decision in any way.

Chris had spoken to his son before the pick and could tell the emotions of not being selected were starting to get to him. But by the time, Dallas’ assistant director of college scouting had returned from a side room to the draft room, the franchise had decided that the former Kansas State star was their man.

“For me, it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever been involved in,” the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel Will McClay explained after the Draft.

“Just to have a guy that we value so much as an employee and the work that he does, and then to have so much positive be said about his son and then to watch the tape and see just how impactful he will be on the field, then have that moment to share that, because it’s all about family.
