‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ trailer, release date & more to know about sequel starring LeBron James
NBA

Everybody get up. It’s time to slam now. We got another jam going down.

“Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 film “Space Jam” starring Michael Jordan, features four-time NBA MVP LeBron James playing a fictionalized version of himself and leading the “Tune Squad” against the “Goon Squad,” a team created by an evil computer algorithm. You know, super normal stuff.

Can James’ “Space Jam” movie be to Generation Z what MJ’s version was to millennials? That remains to be seen, but it’s probably safe to say some analysts will use these films as fuel for the ongoing GOAT debate because, well, that’s always what happens.

For now, let’s focus on everything we do know about “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” including details on the release date, plot and cast.

‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ release date

“Space Jam: A New Legacy” is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 16, 2021. It will be available to watch both in traditional movie theaters and on HBO Max.

‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ plot

So, yeah, this gets a little weird. Here’s a brief synopsis:

In this film, basketball champion and global icon LeBron James goes on an epic adventure alongside timeless Tune Bugs Bunny. When James and his young son Dom — who dreams of being a video game developer — are trapped in a digital space by a rogue AI, James must get them home safe by leading Bugs, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to victory over the AI’s digitized champions on the court: a powered-up roster of basketball stars as you’ve never seen them before.

And that “rogue AI” is played by . . . Don Cheadle. Yes, that’s Academy Award nominee and War Machine himself Don Cheadle. Pretty nice offseason signing.

‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ cast

In addition to the listed cast, multiple NBA and WNBA players will reportedly make cameo appearances in “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” including Anthony Davis, Chris Paul and Diana Taurasi.
