NFL and police investigating after Arizona’s Kyler Murray ‘hit in face by fan’

The NFL have announced the police are investigating after a fan appeared to strike Kyler Murray in the face during the game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Arizona Cardinals.

During the celebrations following a rousing victory for the Cardinals, a man appeared to reach out as Murray high-fived members of the crowd and struck the quarterback in the face with an open hand. The 25-year-old was visibly angered, trying to get at the fan while the whole encounter was caught on video.

The Cardinals were 20-0 down at half-time before landing a dramatic 29-23 win in overtime. Byron Murphy Jr's game-ending fumble return sparked the celebrations.

Murray ran towards some front-row spectators at the Allegiant Stadium donning Cardinal jerseys and had jubilantly high-fived a few of them before his joy turned to fury.

Video footage that has circulated on social media appears to show the incident, which has now seen a police investigation called.

Las Vegas police spokesman Larry Hadfield told the Associated Press that a battery complaint was filed around 6:30pm local time on Sunday.

He added that “a spectator at the stadium struck a professional football player", though did not add any further details over who filed the complaint.

Murray has not spoken out on the incident while the Cardinals have turned the media towards Las Vegas police. It puts a sour note on a fine night for the quarterback, who had a sensational game.

It was his two touchdowns and two two-point conversions in the fourth quarter that turned the match on its head and led to victory for the visiting side. It was Murray's first victory since agreeing a jaw-dropping $230.5m (£201.58m) five-year contract extension.
