Freddie Flintoff is being lined up for a permanent role with England, pal David Lloyd says.

Ex-Sky commentator Bumble suggested cricket hero Fred, recently seen in public for the first time after a horror Top Gear crash last December, could return as a coach. Flintoff, 45, was airlifted to hospital after flipping a three-wheeled racing car while filming for the BBC show.

Flintoff has been out of the public eye following a horror 130mph crash while filming the new series of the hit show. But last week he was seen during England’s warm-up for a match against New Zealand.

And Bumble, 76, reckons Freddie – who still has visible facial injuries – could make a permanent return. He said: “I think that’s the way he’s looking. He’s done telly, he’s done boxing. This is a perfect time for him to come back.

“I’m a big advocate for iconic players like that to spend some time away from the game and then come back.” Lloyd said Flintoff would have to manage his return “step by step”.

Although there’s no formal confirmation Freddie is leaving Top Gear, a BBC announcement is expected soon.

However, there are also doubts Top Gear could return to screens, with the Daily Mail claiming that the show might be axed following the accident. The report also claimed that Flintoff's last words before the terrifying smash were: "Do I need a helmet?"

A source has told the outlet that Top Gear "will not and cannot" return for another series.
