Phillip Stokes hoping to be on Cloud nine with Guineas hopefuls

It’s not every day a three-year-old colt sits three-wide the trip and blitzes his rivals by five and a half lengths.

The thumping win might have only been in a 1200m maiden race at Cranbourne but seeing is believing and trainer Phillip Stokes is confident Savannah Cloud can stand up and be counted as a genuine Caulfield Guineas contender on Saturday.

The son of Savabeel will run in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude over 1400m and if he runs as Stokes hopes his current Guineas price of $21 could then be slashed.

Stokes, who has thrown in a Cox Plate nomination for Savannah Cloud, has always thought the colt has high ability and that was on show back in July with an eye-catching second to Sense Of Honour over 1200m at Flemington.

He then got his maiden out of the way with the Cranbourne blitz and spring riches could now be calling.

“What I am really liking about him is he is starting to really relax in his trackwork,” Stokes said.

“He will definitely take his place on Saturday, we were really happy with his work this morning and it indicated he has come on from that last run.

“He has been around Caulfield once before earlier in his career so he has had a look at the track – it’s going to be a very tough race but I think he’s an exciting horse.

“We thought he was going to win at Cranbourne that day but I must admit I was a little bit worried because going into the run he had been overdoing it a bit in his trackwork.

“But he relaxed beautifully that day and the rest took care of itself.”

In addition to having some big fish to fry with Mr Quickie in the Group I Underwood Stakes on Saturday, Stokes will also have unbeaten filly Instant Celebrity lining up in the Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m).

She is the $2.80 favourite for Saturday’s race, coming off three successive wins in Adelaide.

“She couldn’t have been any more impressive in Adelaide, just the way she has been doing it,” Stokes said.

“I think she is very exciting – she is more of a classic type that might even get over further maybe to an Oaks trip in time.

“It is her first time away from Morphettville but she seems to take everything in and she is quite intelligent, we go to the Prelude and then off the Guineas.”

Instant Celebrity is the current $6 Thousand Guineas favourite.
