Racing lore knows Night Raid was the sire of the legendary Phar Lap but the modern racehorse of the same name is in line for a shot at the Group 1 Thousand Guineas next month.
The 2020 version of Night Raid successfully made a huge leap in class in Saturday’s Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at The Valley.
Trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr had enough faith in Night Raid to give her a crack at black type racing at the start after a dominant Tatura maiden win.
Mark Zahra did the rest, lifting Night Raid ($3.50 fav) to a narrow win over the previously unbeaten Aidensfield ($6) and the in-form Dirty Thoughts ($5.50).

Kent Jr said next month’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield was the target for Night Raid, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Vancouver.
But the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude at Caulfield in a fortnight was her next stop.
“That was always the plan,” he said. “Providing she pulls up well, fingers crossed. Two weeks (into the Thousand Guineas Prelude) and then hopefully the big one.
“She’s all class, all quality. She looked so good today in the yard. She just lowers her head, walks from the yard. Beautiful walker, like a panther.
“We’ve got a few Vancouvers at home and we had the feeling that they would like a mile. We’re optimistic that she’ll be scopey enough to be a miler.”
TAB.com.au installed Night Raid as a $10 equal favourite in its Thousand Guineas market. Aidensfield firmed from $26 to $15 for the October 10 event.
