Gordon Elliott eyes Champion Hurdle success for Samcro

Samcro is 3-1 joint-favourite for the Champion Hurdle with Betfair after Gordon Elliott revealed the two-mile showpiece would be his star’s main target this season.

Gigginstown’s six-year-old, who won the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham in March, will begin his quest for Festival glory at Down Royal on Friday.

“I’ve spoken to [owners] Michael and Eddie O’Leary and we’ve decided to keep him over hurdles this season in the hope he can develop into a Champion Hurdle contender,” said the trainer.

Samcro, unbeaten in his first four outings over hurdles last season, fell on his final start of the campaign at Punchestown and connections had since been mulling a career over fences.

However, Co Meath-based Elliott confirmed Samcro would stay hurdling.

He said: “I’ve never had a Champion Hurdle horse before, and Gigginstown have yet to win it, so we thought that it was worth giving him a shot at the race.”

Champion Hurdle (Betfair): 3 Buveur D’Air, Samcro, 9 Melon, 10 Laurina, 14 Summerville Boy, 16 bar.
