Favourites draw good gates for Australian Derby

Saturday marks the 160th edition of the time-honoured $2 million Australian Derby (2400m) and the field has been declared and barriers allocated.

The Australian Derby was first run in 1861 when won by Kyogle and the only year the race wasn’t run was in 1978 when it was moved from the spring to autumn and former great Dulcify won a controversial and memorable renewal in the first autumn running in 1979.

In 2021, a field of 15 colts and geldings will clash with a sole filly – Spring Champion Stakes winner Montefilia which is aiming to become the 10th filly and the first since Shamrocker in 2011 to win the blue-ribband.

Montefilia, trained by David Payne, drew barrier 4 and firmed from $4 into $3.50 with TAB Fixed Odds.

The $5 second favourite Sky Lab remained solid after drawing barrier 6 with New Zealand Derby winner Rocket Spade on the next line of betting at $7 after drawing barrier 2.

Randwick Guineas winner Lion’s Roar eased from $9 to $11 after drawing barrier 13 for John O’Shea.

While Gai Waterhouse is the Doncaster Mile benchmark trainer with seven previous wins in the race – she’s still chasing her first success in the Australian Derby and with her training partner Adrian Bott, saddles up Tulloch Stakes winner Yaletown which jumps from barrier 10 and is a $16 chance.

Bart Cummings’ grandson Edward will also have his first Group 1 starter in Saturday’s Australian Derby. Prompt Prodigy is a $26 chance after his second placing in the Tulloch Stakes and starts from barrier 9.
