All-Star Mile winner Mugatoo primed for Doncaster after tune-up gallop at Newcastle

Doncaster favourite Mugatoo remains on track to complete a lucrative mile double this autumn.

The Kris Lees-trained gelding was in cruise control as he completed a crucial tune-up gallop at his home track of Newcastle on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the first serious hit-out for the son of Henrythenavigator since claiming a memorable win in the $5 million All-Star Mile at The Valley on March 13.

Mugatoo worked over 1000m with Enchanted Heart and Continuation and showed his class late to ease past his stablemates under a tight hold from regular jockey Hugh Bowman.

“He hasn’t done a lot since he got back from Melbourne so it was just about keeping him ticking over and he reacted well to it,” Lees said.

“Hugh (Bowman) was happy with him and it will just be about keeping him fresh now that we are keeping him over the mile.

“The bonus for him has been the extra week. Going into the race with four weeks instead of three has been a blessing.”

Mugatoo is the $4.50 outright TAB.com.au favourite for the Doncaster Mile, staged on April 10 at Randwick.

Lees and managing owners Australian Bloodstock will contemplate backing up Mugatoo in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes a week after the Doncaster if the star import remains in good shape.

Meanwhile, Bowman made his trip to Newcastle a worthwhile excursion by taking one ride on the card for Lees and it proved a winning decision.

The Hall Of Fame jockey piloted promising filly I Say Hello to a thrilling success from back in the field to claim the Minder Cloud Services F&M Benchmark 64 (1200m).

Lees confirmed he will now contemplate giving the daughter of Iffraaj her chance in stakes grade in the back end of the autumn.
