All Aged Stakes: James Cummings has strong hand to topple favourite Masked Crusader

James Cummings can go into Saturday’s $600,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes at Randwick feeling like he’s got his bases covered.

The Godolphin trainer is set to saddle up three starters in the 1400m feature with a pair of last start Group 1 winners set to give his stable plenty of firepower in the Sydney Autumn Carnival ending feature event.

Cummings has Canterbury Stakes victor Savatiano, recent Doncaster Mile winner Cascadian and one-time Group 1 hero Kementari all engaged for the All Aged.

Savatiano rates as his stables best chance with the bookies on the second line of betting at $7.

The Street Cry mare is so far unbeaten in 2021 after following up a January win in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes with her maiden Group 1 victory in March’s Canterbury Stakes.

“We’ve given her a freshen up since the Canterbury Stakes and she is very well,” Cummings said.

“We have kept her lightly raced deliberately this campaign and she has benefited from it.

“She arrives in this in very good form and has excellent form around Masked Crusader for example after beating him in that Canterbury Stakes and he’s come up favourite in this.”

Savatiano was given a quiet Randwick trial back on April 9 to get her ready for her latest Group 1 assignment and will combine with Hall Of Fame jockey Hugh Bowman again this weekend.

Jamie Kah will continue her association with Cascadian after piloting the gelding to win the Doncaster on Day 1 of The Championships and he’s continued to thrive ahead of his latest Group 1 test.

“He’s pulled up brilliantly,” Cummings said.

“I think that‘s proudly as good as he has ever pulled up from a big race since (in Australia) and is going into the race full of confidence after his Doncaster win.”

Cascadian is considered a $9 chance to complete a Group 1 double.

The 2018 Randwick Guineas winner Kementari is the outsider of Cummings’ trio at $31 and will be ridden by Rachel King.

It’s a second-up assignment for the son on Lonhro after running on from the back half of the field to finish sixth in the William Reid Stakes at The Valley back on March 19.

“He seems to be coming along perfectly,” Cummings said.

“He is stepping back up to the 1400m here and looked perfect there hitting the line nicely in the William Reid.”

Hawkes Racing sprinter Masked Crusader is the $2.80 favourite with TAB.com.au.
