Wild interview after ex-champ’s bloodbath

Heavyweight star Andy Ruiz Jnr hadn’t fought since his blockbuster world title rematch against Anthony Joshua in December 2019.

More than a year after that defeat, Ruiz finally made his long-awaited return to the ring on Sunday AEST — and delivered a bloodbath of epic proportions against fan-favourite veteran Chris Arreola.

Just like when Ruiz claimed one of the biggest upsets in boxing history to defeat Joshua in their first meeting, he was forced to fight back from an early knockdown to win.

Unlike his seventh-round TKO win over Joshua, this time it took him the full 12 rounds to earn victory — a unanimous decision win.

And the result inspired 40-year-old Arreola to deliver a simply bonkers interview.

It didn’t take long for the fireworks to go off at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Ruiz came out of the blocks like a man possessed, targeting Arreola’s body and tagging him multiple times – but copping no small amount of heat himself.

But in the second round, Arreola monstered his rival with a flurry of strikes – sending him down to a knee with an overhand flush on Ruiz’s left ear. Ruiz, hurt and on wobbly feet, responded by launching his cannonball fists in a wild flurry.

Somehow, the former champion survived the round – and the next round, despite Arreola’s left hook smashing into Ruiz’s chin in the kind of punch that would knock out many a weaker fighter.

Ruiz wobbled, slumped, and nearly fell to the canvas, but stumbled backwards and kept his feet. Despite looking on the brink of defeat, Ruiz punched his way back into the fight as the duo traded monster shots.

Ruiz began to find a comfortable tempo as the fight became a tactical battle, with Arreola struggling to push the pace against Ruiz’s hand speed. But that understates how furious the exchanges of slugging were, with flurries of action sending fans wild.

Then in the eighth round, Ruiz stung Arreola with a right hook that struck the side of Arreola’s left shoulder. The veteran shook out his arm while grimacing in what appeared serious pain – a rarity for a hardman who has taken batterings without a word of complaint.

The wildly entertaining clash continued with Ruiz landing a right hand on Arreola’s ear, and continuing to smash the injured left shoulder in the final rounds.

“I’ll live,” Arreola told the referee about his shoulder before the final round.

Ruiz was out for blood, but Arreola – forever the warrior – showed the toughness that has seen him star for 17 years as a professional.

The crowd was standing as one as the pair punched through to the final bell. The judges scorecards finished 117-110, 118-109 x2.

Arreola was infuriated at the result, saying: “All y’all can suck my mother f***ing d**k.”
