Defiant Australia attempt to craft India’s Shakespearean tragedy

Indore is an unlikely venue to invoke Shakespeare, but the insightful Bard picked India’s predicament more than 400 years ago.

When he penned “hoist with his own petard” during Hamlet, Shakespeare could easily have been pointing to India’s pitch doctoring blowing up in their faces.

To be bowled out for just 109 shortly after lunch on the opening day by a fly-in rookie spinner, after winning the toss and batting, is a spectacular reinvention of Test cricket.

If the pitches in Nagpur and Delhi were overcooked, Indore’s was left in a neglected oven as everyone headed off for a family holiday.

‘Jaddu’ Kuhnemann rips out India before a Khawaja special

Coined by Queensland teammates some years ago, the nickname “Jaddu” always seemed a touch optimistic for Matt Kuhnemann when lined up against the Indian spin bowling exploits of Ravindra Jadeja himself. Not anymore.

On a bone dry and treacherous Indore pitch, Kuhnemann did a day one job on India that Jadeja could only have applauded, before Usman Khawaja made sure the breach was exploited by Australia with one of his finest Test innings.

Kuhnemann (5-16) had been behind Ashton Agar in considerations for this tour, but his accuracy and at times vicious spin out of a bone dry Indore surface was exactly the formula needed to crack open India’s top order.

Welcome to day two, will we see a third?

Afternoon sports fans,

Day two and the reckoning it promises is upon us. Critical first hour or so at Indore given this Test is deliciously poised. Australia lead by 47 with one more recognised batter in Carey to come while Ravindra Jadeja was starting to rev up late last night as this pitch continues to sing.

I’ll be manning these keys into the late evening, Dan Brettig is our man on the ground so feel free to comment or throw a query our way throughout.

Giddy up!
