Sri Lanka v England SCORECARD: Updates from third Test in Colombo
- England head into the third Test against Sri Lanka with an unassailable 2-0 lead
- Jonny Bairstow returns to the England team and will bat at No 3 in the order
- Captain Joe Root has challenged his team to round off the year with a victory
England face Sri Lanka in the third and final Test in Colombo with players jostling for position in the starting line-up.
Joe Root’s side may have already sealed series victory but for players such as Jonny Bairstow, there are places up for grabs.
Injury meant Bairstow missed the first Test and as his replacement, Ben Foakes, scored a century to keep his place for the second encounter.
Injury to Sam Curran has paved the way for Bairstow to return for Colombo and he will bat at No 3.
Captain Joe Root has urged his players to round off the year with a victory.
‘It’s been quite a journey for the group of players, the Test team,’ Root said. We did start the year in difficult circumstances and weren’t playing our best cricket but we’ve found a way to get to a really strong position.
‘There’s been a few changes along the way but as a group we’ve found a way we want to go about things.
‘It’s been really pleasing that everyone has bought into that and given us a great opportunity to hopefully win this series 3-0.
‘That would be massive for this team. One area where we’ve not been as good as we can be in the past is winning back to back games and this would be a great opportunity for us to show we’re becoming more consistent, that we’re finding ways of winning and playing good cricket for longer periods of time.
‘It would be a brilliant achievement which would fill us with a huge amount of confidence.’
