John Cena has teased a possible WrestleMania 35 opponent – amid speculation the WWE legend could face Samoa Joe.
The wrestling icon is still without a confirmed match on the Grandest Stage of Them All, despite it being just four weeks away.
The 41-year-old has closed the company’s flagship annual event five times, since his debut at WrestleMania 20 back in 2004.
But fans aren’t even sure whether ‘Big Match John’ will show up at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday, April 7.
And the fact new United States Champion Samoa Joe mentioned his name in a backstage promo led to rumours they could clash.
However, the suggestion he’d meet Joe – who he trained with in the early 2000s – was played down by veteran journalist Dave Meltzer.
He noted on an episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that this was not the plan for the Show of Shows, at least as of a week ago.
And now the Leader of the Cenation has sparked talk online that he could be facing another man who he encountered early in his career.
Cena took to Instagram today to post a rare throwback photo – with no caption – of Kurt Angle, who announced his imminent retirement on Raw last night.
He’s used Instagram to tease feuds in the past, having posted pics of The Undertaker, also with no caption, prior to their match at WrestleMania 34.
Cena debuted on WWE SmackDown back on June 27, 2002 by answering an open challenge from Angle, famously boasting of his "ruthless aggression".
The future face of the company lost that match to the Olympic Gold Medalist, but it began his historic WWE run and now their shared story could come full circle.
Angle, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame last year by none other than Cena, declared that he would have one last match at Mania.
In a post-Raw interview he discussed potential names for his last bout including Cena, Joe, AJ Styles, Drew McIntyre, Baron Corbin and Bobby Lashley.
Fans certainly seem impressed by the idea, with one commenting in reply "Kurt Angle versus John Cena needs to happen at Mania" and another adding: "Ruthless Aggression confirmed for Mania?"
Meanwhile, over on Twitter the reaction was also overwhelmingly positive, with one user stating: "It has to be Kurt Angle vs. John Cena at Wrestlemania, right? How could it not be?"
