Manchester United kicked off their pre-season tour in Australia with a 2-0 win against Perth Glory.
James, who joined from Swansea for £15m earlier this summer, made his first appearance for the Red Devils.
The Welsh flyer made his name for Swansea in the Championship and fits the profile of young homegrown players that Solskjaer is looking to recruit.
James, who has already begun making a name for himself on the international stage too, came to prominence with his performances on the left wing.
But the 21-year-old is already making it known he is ready to step up in several other positions as he looks to establish himself in the starting XI.
“For me, that left position was always my favourite, but now I like being versatile,” he told the club’s official website.
“I like playing across the front three. I think it’s important to play in all three positions and all of our forward players can do that.”
Marcus Rashford is expected to occupy the central role in attack having signed a new bumper deal this summer.
Regardless of whether he is involved though the United new boy insists there’s plenty to be optimistic about after their game at Optus Stadium.
He added: “It’s been amazing, you see all the fans out here, they’ve come from everywhere and they were great today.
“We also put in a great performance. I think in the first half we had a few chances that we could have put away, but we showed in the second half that we were clinical.”
