If you think football began in 1992 with the birth of the Premier League, think again – the English top flight is 131 years old.
The first organised league season took place in 1888, and with the exception of enforced breaks for the World Wars, has taken place every year since.
Preston North End were the first champions and Manchester United hold the most titles – but Liverpool, as it stands, have the best overall record in league history.

A fan has posted a table to Reddit aggregating all the wins, losses and draws for teams who have competed in the English top flight over the past 131 years.
Having played more than 4,000 top flight games in their history, it is Liverpool who come out on top, with 1,934 wins and 6,833 points.
Their points total is more than 100 higher than second placed Arsenal, while their two greatest rivals – Everton and United – are third and fourth respectively.

Everton hold the record for the most top flight games of any English club – they are the only ones to break the 4,500 mark – but have also suffered more losses than any other team, more than 1,500.
United supporters meanwhile will point to the fact that they have nearly 400 games in hand on Liverpool – that’s a lot of midweek matches.
Aston Villa make up the top five, while current Premier League contenders Manchester City, Tottenham and Chelsea are in the top 10, alongside north-east pair Newcastle and Sunderland.
