Antoine Griezmann remains ‘certain of a move to Barcelona’ this summer and expects a deal to go through when his release clause drops next month.
The French World Cup winner will call time on his five-year stay at Atletico Madrid after revealing last month that he will leave the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.
Griezmann has been at the centre of a transfer tussle between the pair of Spanish giants for over 12 months now but it seems he will finally get his wish in the coming weeks.
Antoine Griezmann is ‘certain of a move to Barcelona’ this summer, claim Mundo Deportivo
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, ‘Griezmann’s only goal is to play for Barca next season’ and he ‘still regrets turning down the chance to join them last summer.’
Griezmann would command a hefty fee for any potential buyers but Barcelona will be encouraged by a significant drop in his release clause.
As part of his contractual agreement at Atletico, Griezmann’s fee will drop to £105million (€120m) on July 1 from an even more eye-watering original cost of £175m (€200m).
Mundo Deportivo also report that Griezmann will have to accept the terms he agreed with Barcelona last summer before his move fell through. It is also claimed he will have to accept not being the focal point of Barca’s like attack as he is at Atletico.
During the 2018 summer window Barcelona looked to be closing in on signing Griezmann, only for the player himself to make a bizarre short documentary revealing his decision to stay.
However he announced in May that he would be leaving Atletico this summer and appeared to confirm earlier this week that he knows where his future lies.
Griezmann has been on international duty with France but now wants to sort his club future
‘I know where I’ll be playing next season,’ Griezmann said in an interview with French TV programme Telematin.
‘A decision has been made and it should confirmed very soon.’
Atletico’s president Enrique Cerezo admitted last week he doesn’t have the ‘slightest idea’ where their star player will end up next season.
‘Griezmann has been with us for five years and done a splendid job,’ he told Spanish broadcaster Onda Cero.
‘We have a good relationship. Nice, trustworthy. I hope wherever he goes he will be treated the same as he has been with us.
‘I don’t know where he’s going, he didn’t say. I don’t have the slightest idea where he will go. I don’t think anyone knows.’
Asked whether Barcelona have initiated transfer discussions over Griezmann, Cerezo replied: ‘No one from Barca has contacted me.’
