UFC chief Dana White believes the highly-anticipated rematch between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov will take place in 2019.

McGregor tapped out to the undefeated Russian in the fourth round of their lightweight title bout but the fight was followed by a mass brawl that led to both men receiving temporary suspensions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

As Nurmagomedov climbed the cage to fight jiu-jitsu coach Dillon Danis, McGregor was brutally attacked inside the Octagon by two members of the Russian’s team, prompting wild scenes in Las Vegas.

There will be a hearing in January to finalise the punishment for both fighters but White has admitted a second fight between the pair may not bee too far away.

‘I think a lot of people want to see that fight,’ White told TMZ Sports.

‘We gotta see how this thing [plays out]. Obviously, again, we haven’t gone in front of the Nevada State Athletic Commission. That’s gotta happen and when it does we can figure out how this whole thing plays out.

‘Is Max [Holloway] moving to 155lbs…Tony Ferguson’s obviously in the mix…we gotta see how this thing plays out.’

However, when asked whether the fight could happen this year, White added: ‘Yeah, I do.

‘Obviously, guys are going to have to win and it depends how long the suspensions are, but yeah, as long as everything goes right this fight should happen.’

McGregor’s manager Audie Attar recently revealed his client is planning for a return to the octagon during 2019.

Attar told MMA Betz: ‘We’re still going through the Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing, that was postponed until January but we are confident in those results.

‘Everything is normal. Just keep it moving. Conor didn’t enjoy the loss and he’s looking to avenge that loss, but it is what it is. That’s kind of the attitude he has.

‘He has moved on with his life and he’s launched his Proper 12 whiskey, so he’s been busy with that, and he has a growing family.

‘They are expecting another child soon, and he’s really just focusing on getting back in the gym consistently so when he does make that step back into the Octagon, that he is ready to go and he’s at his best.’
