Race-by-race tips and preview for Newcastle on Thursday

Track good 4/soft 5 and rail out 7m, so should play reasonably on-pace early before levelling out.

Race 1: CLASS 1 HCP (2340m)

Competitive and tricky battle for the stayers to start. Randwick-trained 3YO 1. Eugenio mixes his runs but gets a lovely smoother off the speed. Forced to make a long sustained run at Gosford but can settle closer here and improves back on firmer footing.

Dangers: The better ground is the key too for 3YO Randwick gelding 3. Gayson after not comfortable on the soft 7 at Gosford. Parks on the speed fifth run this prep and should be in the finish. Newcastle filly 4. Western Folk was just fair to the line in that same race after being well backed but can also rebound on firmer ground. Hawkesbury 7YO 2. Cass 'N' Black hit the line nicely last start Canberra and is best of the rest.
How to play it: Eugenio to win and box trifecta 1-2-3-4.

Race 2: CLASS 2 HCP (1600m)

Good race. Keen on well-bred Newcastle filly 5. Angel Of Heaven getting to the mile second-up. Resumed with a strong effort at Muswellbrook and bolted in her only other second-up run last spring.

Dangers: Godolphin-trained 3YO 1. Ligulate is a renowned big finisher who swept home to win at Warwick Farm two runs back before flashing late in a BM 70 at Kensington. Will be getting home strong again but 60kg might be a leveller. Wyong-trained 3. Nitride is an improving 3YO in only his second prep and keeps finding the line as the distances rise. Another that does his best work around this distance is 5YO local gelding 4. Faith In Kind who has been freshened after powering home to win at this track and grade six weeks back, and is in well at the weights after rider's claim. Newcastle filly 6. Zizania has won two straight but up in class, and gelded 3YO recent Rosehill trial winner 2. Stardome can be included in exotics.
How to play it: Angel Of Heaven to win; quinella 1 and 5 and first four: 1-3-5/1-2-3-4-5-6.

Race 3: MAIDEN HCP (1500m)

Not much depth here and Rosehill filly 2. Georgina Gold can break her "duck" second-up after being easily over-run fresh at Kensington. Extra trip an obvious plus being by a Melbourne Cup winner out of a Galileo mare.

Dangers: Warwick Farm 5YO 7. Counterfeited let punters down as an odds-on fancy at Queanbeyan second-up but should be closing hard. Randwick 3YO gelding 9. Geissler failed first-up in town but much better placed here.

How to play it: Georgina Gold to win.

Race 4: BM 64 HCP (1400m)

Local filly 6. Itz Lily has progressed nicely in her first prep, winning two of four, including a dominant Class 1 win last start at Port Macquarie as a red-hot favourite. Been freshened and brought significantly back in trip but kept ticking over at the trials and draws a good gate.

Dangers: Stablemate and smart filly 2. Mystic Hill resumes off two quiet trials but came to hand quickly in first prep, winning two of three, both times steaming home from well back. Wyong-based mare 5. City Of Love is much better suited back on firmer ground after failing and pulling up a little distressed on the heavy 8 last start. Charged home to win her maiden fresh two runs back and has ability. Newcastle mare 9. Longchamp Lass has been solid enough in good Class 2 company this prep and draws well. Randwick mare 1. Regine competed against stronger last winter but hasn't started for eight months and will probably need the run.

How to play it: Itz Lily each way and quinella 2 and 6.

Race 5: PROV & COUNTRY MAIDEN PLATE (900m)

Testing and open dash that sets up nicely for resuming local filly 9. Magnolia Power. Was very competitive across strong maiden company in her first prep and looked sharp at the trials. Rider full of confidence and is the one to beat.

Dangers: Resuming Wyong filly and recent double trial winner 11. She's My Girl, who wears a lugging bit for the first time, is a clear threat. Muswellbrook filly 8. Gotta Minute improves second-up after a strong effort resuming at Coffs Harbour.

How to play it: Magnolia Power to win.

Race 6: CLASS 2 HCP (1200m)

Competitive race, with plenty of capable types resuming. Local filly 7. Stella Sea Sun dashed home to win two straight in her first prep and has had two trials for top trainer.

Dangers: Newcastle 3YO gelding 4. Airwing made an early impact in his first prep, winning second-up two months back before being freshened, but has trialled OK. Lightly raced Wyong 7YO 5. Oakfield Jet resumes and normally comes to hand quickly. Randwick filly and ex-Victorian 8. Steamboat Sally was competitive in the spring around this grade and trialled OK. Randwick colt 6. Watching broke through at Kembla two runs back but this has more depth.

How to play it: Stella Sea Sun each way.

Race 7: BM 64 HCP (1400m)

Tough race to finish. Muswellbrook 7YO 2. Disgraceful isn't far off a win after getting home nicely from well back in the Muswellbrook Cup and rider's claim offsets sharp weight rise.

Dangers: Hawkesbury gelding 1. Redemption Road chased home the smart Re-Edit last start and is hard fit but has to lump a big weight. local gelding 4. Kulnura has had two trials and draws nicely for his return. Talented Muswellbrook gelding 11. Timion has produced three good runs this prep and just failed to arrive in time last start at Scone, but this is stronger; while 3YO gelding 3. Flying Pierro resumes for top metro yard.

How to play it: Disgraceful each way and box first four 1-2-3-4-11.
