For Nathan Gorman watching the birth of his baby daughter this week was scarier than the prospect of fighting knock-out puncher Daniel Dubois for the vacant British heavyweight title this Saturday night.
Little Valencia was due on fight night and her early arrival at 5am Tuesday morning came as a relief for Gorman.
And not only because of the timing. He explains: ‘Seeing this little bundle of joy born safely was petrifying. Getting in the ring with Daniel doesn’t frighten me one bit. This is the fight I’ve been looking forward to most of all.’

As these big men came face to face at their final media event Gorman revealed he had warned his wife that if the birth had happened on its original schedule she must inform to tell until after the fight in the 02 Arena.
He said: ‘I told her sorry love but I’ll have a job to do.’ That might not conform with today’s political correctness but his opponent understands.
Dubois was aware of the situation and says. ‘I knew we would be fighting whatever happened.’
Gorman was more distracted when his son Nathan fell ill with a respiratory problem during training camp.
‘We were spending a lot of time at the hospital,’ he says. ‘I did my running in the car park there.
‘Mercifully it turned out not to be the worst case scenario.’
Valencia comes as ‘extra motivation’. He explains: ‘As I was holding her I promised to bring home that shiny Lonsdale Belt as a present. I can’t let her down.’
Dubois v Gorman will be televised live this Saturday night on BT Sport.
